January 28, 1923

Sun 28   Cool Clear & Sunny   Ralph Isabel & Marjorie went to Sunday School   Came home at Eleven   We were drest for Sunday & all went to Ontario to Maudes & had an Excellent dinner & some Idaho folks came & sayed [stayed] awhile & more Idaho folks came & the room is full   about 3 Palmers all came in 2 autos & brot Mrs Roup & Jennie Boyd  old Wellman Iowa friends & Nabers & we were sure glad to see them   they only stayed a short time   with callers all gone nice fire in the grate we past a very pleasant Eve   Maude gave me a cup of strong hot ginger tea & a hot iron to my feet as I have Symtoms of taking cold

January 26, 1923

At Isabels & Maudes

 Friday January 26 1923   Sun rose clear   we arose about 8   Isabel starts a nice gas fire in our room & brings us hot water to wash    my cold is better but I don’t feel good   I ate 2 pancakes   soon after 10 Ralph came home from land trip to Arizona   tis cold   don’t warm up fast   Roy & Dave called awhile after dinner   all but me went to school   Margaret P graduates    we gave her 2 silver dollars   I commenced a letter to Leslie   I gave Marjorie 50 cents

December 20, 1922

Wed 20   A nice clear moderate winter day   we arose at Sylvias aftr 8  slept well   I wrote to Roy Maude & Isabel & sent Christmas greetings 10,00 to Roy 6,00 to Isabel & 6,00 to Maude   I got Sylvia & Jap to change a 20,00 Bil   I have a poor appetite & feel poorly   I ate little dinner & less supper   we recd a pkg from Dave  will open it Christmas   I sent & got a tube of zink paste & mother doped my back this eve   my back in spots has burned & itched most of the day   I also put 2 one dollar bills in a letter Sylvia sent to Margaret Palmer   the Bills were for a Christmas greeting to Dear Nellies children

February 5, 1922

Sun 5   A very fine cool day   we arose late   I slept only fair & ate a good breakfst of pancakes & my cold is No worse   Isabel has a bad cold & cant talk loud   I drest in my Sunday best   only Marjore & Ralph went to church   I ate a hearty dinner & am feeling much better & Now at 1-30 pm the thermometer stands at 59 & the sun shies warm & is a still beautiful day & we had a good dinner   Beef loaf good fruit salad & whipt cream  about 2 Roys [family] came & Max & Ottos [Otto Klockenteger’s family] & Warren & Nellies 2 children Lamont & Margaret & we had a realy good visit   Especially the young folks

May 27, 1921

Friday May 27 1921   Warm & showery   lots of threatening   I replanted a few pole beans   I piled quite a lot of manure   McConnel still keeps his horses in my Barn & doing nothing   I think they would be better on pasture   I got mail at Noon   cards for my 85 birthday from Maude Marjorie Margaret & from Isabel   I appreciate the remembrance   I got pork & liver 33c   after dinner Mother & I called at Wm Wade & took a nice boquet of roses   Wade is a very sick man & failing fast   I went down town & it looked so like a shower   I didn’t stay long   I tied up a few grape vines  it rained a little shower last nite

March 22, 1919

Saturday March 22 1919   Long Beach Del mar   We arose feeling well & took breakfst at Delmar 25c for 2   A fine warm Sunny morn but soon clouded & the later the cooler & clouder & this eve it looks rainy   we wrote to John & Ellen   I took a walk to the pier & got a paper 3c   Mr Palmer Calld AM   we took dinner at ywca 66c for 2  PM   Warren & 3 children & Mrs Boyd came   we went down on the pike & I got the children p nuts & pop corn   I got cold and came to our room   we took supper at Delmar   pd 30c for both   I sat in the mens room & read awhile & then talked with the janitor & proprietor awhile

February 2, 1919

Sun 2    Cold cloudy  rain a little   put on clean clothes & took breakfast at Delmar Cafe 30c for 2 & I went to get shaved & found no Barber shops open on Sunday   so far I find this a moral city   have seen no disorder or drunkenness & no intoxicants sold but tis colder than I bargained for Especially Eves & nites but we have heat enuf in the hotel to take off part of the chil   it rained so mother didn’t go to church but near 11 am I went to the ME Church corner of Pacific & 3rd Sts    a very large fine church  nicely finished & a big congregation   listened to a good sermon on unity of Churches & sun shone most of the time but tis cool   we took dinner at Advent Caffateria 93c   then we took taxi to see Nellie & try to cheer her up   poor girl   she is only a shadow of her former self    we took her 2 skirts & stockings for Margaret & 30c candy for kids   Warren brot us home in a cold rain & we wont have supper as we wont go out in this cold rain   a man in Hotel Parlor sang songs

February 1, 1919

Sat feb 1st & rainy dark & gloomy   we had breakfast at Delmar Cafe 25c for both   we wrote to John & Ellen   Mother wrote to Lavanda   I have headache & feel poorly all day   took dinner at ymca  pd 61c both & went to a store & bot a skirt for Nellie & stockings for Margaret   pd 1,15   read awhile in Minnesota book   bot LA paper 3c   Mother & I walkd to Chamber Commerce & look over the Iowa register [1]  found Mr & Mrs Rupe reg [registered] 2 yrs ago & Vern & Geneva Sigler reg last summer   we took supper at Delmar Cafe  30c for 2   to bed at 8-30   have heat & we need it   we sat in the Sun parlor awhile but too cold

[1] In addition to visiting his children out West, Isaac was in California for a reunion of Civil War soldiers that was held every year and sponsored by the Grand Army of the Republic.

January 29, 1919

Wed 29   warm & dry   Summer time   Slept fairly last nite but both took light breakfast 30c for 2   I sent my Bank book to be ballancd & sent a card to the Wellman Savings Bank   My feet hurt more than common  took a light dinner at Y W Caffateria 60c & after started to find a corn  Dr met Aron P with Nellie for a ride   I got in with them & we got mother & took a fine ride to the Shipyard   could see but little   high fence all round  took Nellie home & rode again   went away out on the pier   boats came in with fisherman & fish   one with 28 large fish   6 fishermen   chrge of $15 for boat & fishing out fit   8 can go   I got cream cones for Margaret & Lamont & pop corn   Palmer took me to corn Dr & he removd 2 corns   pd 50c & feel better   took shoes to be stretched

January 25, 1919

In LB Sat 25   a fine day & warm   we went to store & got a house dress for Nellie 3,75 & gingham for Margaret & a can white cherries & candy for Kids   went to Market & Saw all Kinds of fresh vegetables & strawberries  fine ones   20c qt   Slept good last nite & feel good to day   got our trunk from Depot   pd 50c to landlady   dinner 60c for 2 & Palmer came & Nellie with him & we rode E several miles to the breakers   a fine ride & Nellie enjoyd it but was tired   went to Palmers & I gave Nellie $5 & we took taxi for Hotel & we got a good room   pay $30 a month   I pd $15 down & we are well located   took supper 50c both   we greatly appreciate the Kindness of Mr & Mrs Palmer [Nellie’s in-laws]
