July 25, 1919

Friday July 25, 1919   hot & dry   Now at 4 Pm tis 98 at the well house  we arose a little early & I called Ora Turnipseed & he will help me with his truck & I engaged Aggson & we went to my pasture in his auto & got a load of dirt on the truck & went to the Taylor Cemetery & fixt the 7 or 8 graves by leveling with 2 loads of good fine soil   I pd Ora $2 & he left about 9 am   Aggson & I leveled & fixt the graves in good Shape but left the load of manure til it rains & we can level the dirt some more   Geo Sigler came to the cemetery & we straightened the monuments to Joe Newlands & Chas Wilsons graves   Aggson & wife both took dinner here  She helpd Mother   this am I pd her 1,00 & him 1,50 by giving him a chk for $2,50   I got mail after dinner   it was late   I got 35c pork for dinner  recd a card from Mrs Shille r  after supper at 7-30 we went with C C Gardners to John Flemings   Mrs Rupe & Florilla Longwell also went   we had a nice Social Eve & calld at Dr Gardners in Lex   home at 10  a very warm Eve   I took John Carter basket gren Husks cobs

July 29, 1918

Mon 29   A very fine clear da & cooler   Leslie & Lavanda came from Lex [Lexington] early & Leslie left about 8 am for Ioa City to  Washington DC according to orders   8 yrs ago in June 28 he left for Clermont to begin the practice of medicine & he has done well   I would not ask or expect him to do better but he gave it all up to serve his country   he goes as MD with rank of 1st Lieut & we will greatly miss him & be more anxious than ever for the war to cease   Lavanda & Ellen went with him to Ioa City   They came back 3 pm & Willard took Leslies car & went to Keota to stay with his mother to nite   I sent her 1 doz ears of nice sweet corn   I saved 2 ears for seed   I dug & put in the cellar 1 ½ bu potatos   Willard got John Carters auto & we went to the Taylor Cemetery & put a can of nice flowers on each of our 7 graves   I mowed the alley & other lawn

March 16, 1918

Sat 16   A fine drying clear day   lt [light] SW   Cow to McConnels   Tony & Harvey came & workd half a day up stairs in girls room & Hall   Mrs Ike Lindseay calld & I sold her 2 bu potatos & she pd me 2,50 & I delivered them   young Amlong came with team & bot 5 bu potatos & pd me 6,25  Crosset boys came & bot ½ bu potatos & pd 65c   after dinner John Carter helpd me take my jersey cow to McConnels   I then went to a sale of traps in E part of town   Vic clerkd & I was fool enuf to buy an old bench 20c & curtain stretcher 80c   I pd Vic 1,00   I gave mother 3,25 & she went down town PM   towards eve I went to the Bank & PO & burn a pile of trash from the grape arbor   Mrs Jake Hicks Calld   I called on Dutton
