March 24, 1919

Mon 24   Warmer   Mostly cloudy pleasant   we are both well   took breakfst at Delmar 25c   I took a walk to the pier then read Hawkeye  letters from Dave Nora Allie & Willard   he is slowly gaining but had the flu real bad   Harriet came from Los angeles AM & we took dinner at ywca  pd 90c for 3   I went to pike & got 12 picture folders for 1,00 & sent on to each Willard Mrs Lindsey Allie Roy Isabel Nora Maude Mrs Doc G Sylvia Dave & Mrs England   I went to PO & got 15 1c stamps & 5 2c stamps pd 25c   I got an Eve paper 2c   we took Supper at Delmar Cafe   I pd 75c for 3   I sat in the mens room & talkd till near 8 when I came to our room & wrote & read

March 23, 1919

Sun 23   Commences a beautiful warm day   we both arose feeling well & drest for Sunday   we took breakfst at Del Mar 25c for both   I took a walk to the South end of the pier & saw three boats come in for San Pedro & Catalina   came back to our room before 10   all ready for church   went to Congregational Church & heard a good sermon on St Paul   took dinner at Advent   pd 62c for 2  talkd awhile in the sun parlor & took a walk along the pike to the pier   more folks than comon in town   we took supper at Advent   pd 60c for 2 & went with Mrs Saners to 1st Presby Church   cor [corner] 5 & locust & heard a rough spoken Evangel Trotter & he begged for money   we went west in place of South coming home & were set right by the Electric revolving cross on first M E church   bed at 10 Oclock

March 22, 1919

Saturday March 22 1919   Long Beach Del mar   We arose feeling well & took breakfst at Delmar 25c for 2   A fine warm Sunny morn but soon clouded & the later the cooler & clouder & this eve it looks rainy   we wrote to John & Ellen   I took a walk to the pier & got a paper 3c   Mr Palmer Calld AM   we took dinner at ywca 66c for 2  PM   Warren & 3 children & Mrs Boyd came   we went down on the pike & I got the children p nuts & pop corn   I got cold and came to our room   we took supper at Delmar   pd 30c for both   I sat in the mens room & read awhile & then talked with the janitor & proprietor awhile

February 27, 1919

Thursday February 27th 1919   Long Beach  Del Mar   A fine Sunny day  we all arose feeling well   3 took breakfst at Del Mar 50c for 3   Harriet dont breakfst   I bot a paper 3c   letter from Allie   we all 4 wrote to Leslie  2 girls & I took a walk to market Library & Chamber of Commerce   the girls Nora & Harriet registered   I bot 1 doz fine Navel oranges 15c  Warren Called at Hotel   we took dinner at Advent 1,60 paid   About 1-30 pm Warren came & took us 18 or 20 miles NW to Rodondo Beach & to moon stone beach   a cold high NW wind made it disagreeable & nothing new to see at the beach   I bot some pop corn & we looked for moon Stones & in our anxiety to find a moon stone we didnt pay attention to the high waves & they caught us all first & last & wet our feet real wet   I got a dry pair sox 25c & put them on with wet shoes   it helpd some   we rode back to Hotel more comfortable as we didnt face the wind   reachd hotel near 6   took supper at Del Mar   I pd 80c   this eve recd letter from Leslie in France with his picture   he is well & looks fine

February 26, 1919

Wed 26   A fine day   bracing morning   we all arose feeling good   took breakfst at Delmar   pd 40c for 3   I got a paper 3c & read & wrote some  got letters of sympathy from Jap Sylvia Isabel & Mattie Sigler   Harriet fixt up a small box of nice large oranges & sent to Willard   we went down along the pike   a flying machine came over & alighted down the Beach  we went to see it & talked with the Aviator   he owned the machine & was getting a passenger now & then   a 2 or 3 hour trip for $5   he didnt get me we took dinner at Advent 1,90 for 4   aftr dinner I went to the farmer & merchants Bank  corner Pine & 3rd st & gave a check for $50   I bot 2 writing tablets 15c & 1 lb p nut [peanut] candy 30c & paid our room rent 10$ to Mrs E B Stanisfer   also pd $3 for girls room for 1 wk   took supper at Del Mar 90c for 4   Sat in the Parlor & heard that fool girl yell   tis raining   was cold chilly all PM

February 25, 1919

Tuesday February 25th 1919   A fine cool day   we took breakfst at Del Mar 50c for 3   Harriet ate none   we all went to the market   I bot Winesap apples 15c & Bellflowr 25c & 1 doz Oranges 15c   at 10-30 Mr Palmer took us all to his home & Warren took us to Whittier 25 miles   a beautiful drive thru orange & Lemon groves & little Lamont Dear Nellies youngest boy went with us & enjoyd it   we took dinner in Whittier   I pd 2,10 for 5 & mother & girls went to call on Mrs Snavely  Noras Aunt   we got auto fixt   I pd 60c   we lookd at a small nice park & then went & calld at Samsons Neighbors of our younger days   Mr S was not home but I had a pleasant call with Bell as we used to call her   we then found mother & girls at Snaveleys  a sister of Rev Adam Schwimley   a pleasant faced woman   we then drove to Mr Fredely nee Birdie Zimmerman   made a nice call   lookd over their home & made arrangmts for a visit & picnic next Sat & got Harriets Satchel from Fredeleys   went to Los angels & drove thru the city for miles when it seemed we couldnt get thru & at 7 eve arrived at Del Mar & I wanted Warren & Lamont to take supper with us but they went home   thus ends a busy & pleasant day   I got a room at our Hotel for Nora & Harriet   pay $8 for a week

February 24, 1919

Mon 24   A real nice cool day   Nellies Funeral   we 3 arose feeling well & took breakfst at Del Mar  50c for 3   Nora & I went & bout $5 worth of pink & white flowers for Nellies Funeral & just after noon Harriet came  brot from Los Angels by Mrs Birdie Zimmerman Freedley   we were very glad to see her & we all went to dinner at Advent 1,46 for 4 & at 2 PM   a Mr Heckman came with a fine car & took us to the funeral of our dear Daughter Nellie   at undertaker Holton sermon very appropriate  Neely intermit Sunset Cemetery   we all lookd at the stone I selected for Nellie & Mr Heckman brot us back to Del Mar & we each thankd him as he would take no pay   women & children Staid awhile & I bot them apples & pop corn   we took supper at Del Mar 55c for 4

Note:  Nellie succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 36 years.
